: google's guiding principles :

... the crazy people over at Critical Mass have an executive think tank blog they call Experience Matters ... personally, I think Kingsley is a natural fit for their environment, and rather wish I was as well!

But I digress ... apparently they recently had a conversation about guiding principles and David Armano of Logic+Emotion introduced a Google Top Ten list, even more than guiding principles for them, almost core values. As usual, I can see a LOT of applications for this kind of thinking ( Google's AND Critical Mass's ) in a whole raft of organizational settings. Take a quick read and see what you think ... these are Google's 'aspirations' for their user's experience.

So, from the desk of the CEO ... the Critical Mass 'blog post "Getting Googley" ... ten guiding principles form the foundation of a great experience. What’s interesting is that it is in Google's corporate information. They hold these guiding principles close to their core. And it shows.

When these principles work in an experience they call them getting “Googley.” The principles are simple but powerful ideas that show why Google is so strong in delivering customer value. It’s a well-known fact that Google’s customer value has delivered a lot of business value to their shareholders. Who says business, brand and customer cannot be aligned in an experience?

Start with the list below, and then explore the many interactions you have with Google and see if they ring true.

Ten principles that contribute to a “Googley” customer experience:
1. Focus on people – their lives, their work, their dreams.
2. Every millisecond counts.
3. Simplicity is powerful.
4. Engage beginners and attract experts.
5. Dare to innovate.
6. Design for the world.
7. Plan for today’s and tomorrow’s business.
8. Delight the eye without distracting the mind.
9. Be worthy of people’s trust.
10. Add a human touch.

For more details go to Google Corporate ... each principle is expanded upon, well worth the 4 page printout. Make some notes on it. Italics mine.

It’s no wonder Google has become the go-to for so many of our daily tasks. Simple ideas. Well executed. See if you can get Googley in your next project.
